No Longer Flora

Acrylic and natural ochre on canvas

This painting shows the girls from the Stolen Generations walking together, walking proudly, no longer being classed as flora or fauna due to the result of the 1967 Referendum which gave Aboriginal People the same rights as white Australians.

The girls are wearing natural ochre on their foreheads as part of Ceremony and the lead girl is carrying gum leaves which is an example of flora that the People once were. One of our friends says her Grandmother used to be a tree, as was my Grandmother and all our ancestors after the Invasion and before the 1967 Referendum. 40 years later there is still a lot of healing to be done.
